Yes, In My Backyard is an augmented reality game that prepares citizens for an increasingly densified city through the use of virtual spectacle, public participation, and tiers of incentives. The project began by winning an exhibition competition for cityLAB-UCLA, and we wish to acknowledge that early support.The exhibition, called LA TIMES 10,&#38;nbsp; was held at the Architecture + Design Museum in Los Angeles as part of cityLAB’s 10-year anniversary exhibition. We are honored that the work was exhibited alongside that of the other competition winners: Office Kovacs, First Office, WELCOMEPROJECTS, Field Day, and Reimaging.

	Game Description: Los Angeles, as you know it, is passing away. Over one million people are joining the city in the coming decades. Will Los Angeles evolve or will housing stock shortages doom the city? Intervene! Collect virtual bricks and stack them to form unique density developments—100 bricks equal one home for one future Angelino. Band together with friends or make new ones as you earn amenities such as trains, parks, and grocery stores for your community. Unite with players across Los Angeles to defeat the mega progress bar at Pershing Square—it falls to zero once all 160 million bricks (1.6 million people) have been placed. Your virtual environments inspire change in reality as their volumes set a mark for real housing volume needed. Your interaction between the two worlds cuts across diverse neighborhoods, public and private spheres, and provokes a dialogue that reinforces a truth—that density is inevitable, it must go somewhere, and YES must be the answer.

	Power-Up

	Haiti struggles in every meaningful statistical category. It has poor and inadequate infrastructure, education, and health. On top of this, it is weak economically and unable to respond effectively to inevitable disaster. These mass deficiencies have created serious consequences that work in a brutal chain reaction, resulting in unexpected and increasing severity. The summation of these deficiencies choke Haiti’s ability to sustain itself.

Furthermore, essential infrastructure and services are lacking at the community core which is the major obstacle to positive change in the country.&#38;nbsp;The capital, human resources, and government needed to implement this infrastructure and services are impossible to collect and coordinate. The way to work around these roadblocks is through decentralized, unitized technology, bringing powerful, incremental change.


This project targets Haiti’s core deficiencies directly and integrate them into a singular idea: 
a decentralized, unitized pod, loaded with technology, infrastructure, education, and health services, multiplied at the urban scale. This will power-up Haiti incrementally. A single unit is calibrated to universallly facilitate various types of sites while providing resources to support and advance 100 people per day. This solution can be applicable to all developing countries.

	
This project was exhibited at Dwell On Design at the LA Convention Center and was published in the most recent Neil Spiller book, “Educating Architects.” It was also the catalyst for the Morphosis project, “Life Tree,” which is under construction in Martissant, Haiti.

	These small pods, when multipled on a large scale, operate as a sign of both content and optimism in a place that desperately needs both.
	By providing real, dependable services that help advance local communites, the physical form and graphics of the design become a sort of iconic symbol associated with that content. The sign becomes a reason for optimism—that something new, exciting, and transformative is happening.

Haiti Now*With The Now Institute and Morphosis


Haiti Now, a 700+ page visual almanac, is an intensive cross-disciplinary project dedicated to Haiti’s contemporary urban issues and design potentials. It encompasses the nation’s modern history, politics, infrastructure, ecology, culture, and social issues through graphics, photography, text, and data in an effort to inform and inspire new possibilities for Haiti’s future.&#38;nbsp;"Haiti Now" includes a foreword by The Right Honorable Michaëlle Jean and contributions by former Haitian Prime Minister Michèle Pierre-Louis, Frederick Mangones, Kesner Pharel, Jean W. Wiener, Claudine Michel, Nadege T. Clitandre, and Iwan Baan.&#38;nbsp;The book received a publication grant from the Graham Foundation for Advanced Studies in the Fine Arts.

	Supra Surface

	
The focus of this project is the development of an adaptive surface. The strategy is to create a volumetric panel that emphasizes individual characteristics and combines it with a geometrically rational frame to achieve a reasonable level of feasiblity. The result is an asymmetrical component that obscures the underlying global organization of diamonds and hexagons. This geometric logic was chosen for its flexibility in component orientation and in facilitating twin and triplet relationships.

These components adapt to solar exposure by varying aperature size, projection distance, and component rotation. Their specific assignment within the global surface is informed by solar design analysis software. A simple frame makes this solution scalable for real application.
